First things first, this mini-review will be spoiler-free. If you’re one of the handful of people who have not yet seen ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens,’ you won’t find any plot details here. Read on!
Star Wars is a part of our cultural zeitgeist; the iconic characters, the rousing John Williams score, and the heroic exploits of the original trilogy have transcended a ‘long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away.’ They are a part of our childhoods and of our daily lives, and they have spawned countless parodies and references that keep Star Wars relevant as a franchise to this day. After the disappointment many suffered from the prequel trilogy, eyes were cast upon ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ as potentially either a continuation of that disappointment, or as perhaps a new hope.
Fortunately for us all, ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ meets and exceeds all expectations, positioning itself not only as a worthy installment in the franchise, but also as one of the most entertaining films of 2015.
Director J.J. Abrams blends a masterful combination of familiar nostalgic elements with fresh energy and a young, talented cast. Newcomers Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, and Adam Driver portray characters which are sure to join the pantheon of great legacy characters offered up by the franchise, and provide an exciting framework for stories yet to come. Also impressive is the film’s reliance on practical effects; certainly, digital effects and CGI are utilized, but it is through the physical locations and tangible props that the film begins to ‘feel’ like a Star Wars film.
We’re keeping this review fairly short to avoid spoilers, but let it be known: ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ is a marvel of a film. It doesn’t take a Jedi mind trick to know that this holiday season, this is the film you’re looking for.
