There’s a reason why ‘The Revenant’ – directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu – has gotten so many Oscar nominations. Several reasons, actually, and all of them a compelling reason to say “Perhaps?” when it comes to wondering “Could this be the best film of 2015?” Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, and Domhnall Gleeson, the film has a powerhouse cast that doesn’t fail to delight and the visuals of this film are nothing short of amazing. If you haven’t seen ‘The Revenant’ yet, be sure to make it your next outing – after your 5th viewing of ‘Star Wars,’ of course.
Opening in wide release relatively late in the Academy race, ‘The Revenant’ tells the inspired-by-a-true-story of Hugh Glass, whose traveling companions leave him for dead after barely surviving a vicious bear mauling. Without saying too much, it isn’t being left for dead that pisses Glass (DiCaprio) off so much – no, it’s something much worse, and it sets in motion a revenge plot that sees DiCaprio hauling himself gruntingly through the snow for almost two and a half hours to get justice.
To say that the visuals here are “stunning” would be a disservice. To say DiCaprio and Hardy’s acting here is “phenomenal” would be a gross understatement. To say that this film needed to be as long as it is, though, would also be inaccurate. ‘The Revenant’ is a fantastic film worth your time and money but it could certainly benefit from some tightening up, especially when the film spends multiple minutes showing you snowy vistas you’ve seen before, just from different angles.
There’s little doubt that ‘The Revenant’ deserves every Oscar nomination it’s received but the question of whether it will clinch Best Picture is still very much in the air. See it and decide for yourself before the Academy Awards roll out on February 28, 2016.
