As comedy setups go, how can you go wrong with a kidnapped cat and gangbanging hijinks in service of getting him back? On the surface, the plot of ‘Keanu’ seems like it’d be pretty funny and, to some degree, that’s certainly true. With a few laugh out loud moments, the film does deliver there. The problem, however, is that it tries to deliver too much. ‘Keanu’ is, essentially, a sketch-length joke stretched into a feature film fiasco.
It’s unfortunate because if you strip out a lot of the trying-too-hard filler, there’s something genuinely funny and endearing about ‘Keanu.’ The cat is cute, the setup is kind of insane (in a good way), and Key and Peele come across as friends with genuine love and affection for each other. And Jordan Peele is definitely looking pretty woofy with some scruff here. It’s just too bad that all the positives get lost in the bloated nature of too much of a good thing, sadly.
Even so, there are reasons to see this movie. Without spoiling, we’ll just say the song choices for ‘Keanu’ fuel a lot of the film’s humor, culminating in a scene that definitely had us rolling. And aside from Key and Peele, ‘Keanu’ also sports performances by Method Man, Will Forte, Nia Long, and Luis Guzman. Perhaps the best addition to the cast, though, is Jason Mitchell, who played Easy-E in last year’s ‘Straight Outta Compton,’ a film we’re still raving about several months later.
If you’re in the mood for a comedy, ‘Keanu’ might trip your trigger but ultimately, this one gets a Wait-for-Redbox recommendation from us.
