Twice this year, we’ve seen super hero allies come to blows on the big screen. After a divisive critical and fan reception for ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,’ Marvel Studios is taking a stab at the formula by pitting Captain America against Iron Man in ‘Captain America: Civil War.’ For us, the latest Marvel outing is the superior film, and one certainly worth your time and your money.
‘Captain America: Civil War’ is the 13th Marvel Studios film, and focuses on the destructive fallout that surrounds the Avengers and its members. Even the best of intentions come with consequences, and when an act of heroism results in the loss of innocent lives, the United Nations seeks to control and regulate the team of heroes. Half of the team agrees with these protocols while the others prefer to remain autonomous.
At the core of the film is Captain America (Chris Evans), perhaps the strongest and most fully realized character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He has to navigate tricky moral waters as he balances might versus right and friendship versus the greater good. It is his storyline, and the way it impacts his relationships with Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) and Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) keeps the stakes of ‘Captain America: Civil War’ compelling and personal.
Of course, as with any tentpole Marvel film, you can expect great action sequences. One such scene features a cavalcade of heroes in an epic brawl with one another, with each character receiving a chance to shine. This is the scene that will probably be most talked about, and while it is one that we enjoyed immensely, the sequence that most resonated with us is the final showdown, one we won’t discuss in detail here so as to avoid spoilers.
Got your tickets yet? No? Well what are you waiting for? This is the perfect superhero film both for fans of the genre and those who may be a bit burnt out by the formula. Go see it today!
