The movie trailer warns you upfront: “Beware of Crimson Peak.” And you should take that advice seriously, though not because ‘Crimson Peak’ is a bad movie. In fact, it’s pretty engaging, just not for the reasons the Hollywood marketing machine would have you think.
Directed by Guillermo del Toro (‘Pan’s Labyrinth’) and starring Tom Hiddleston (‘Thor’), Jessica Chastain (‘Zero Dark Thirty’), Charlie Hunnam (‘Pacific Rim’), and Mia Wasikowska (‘Alice In Wonderland’), ‘Crimson Peak’ isn’t the Halloweenish horror flick the trailers make it out to be. Instead, the film is actually more of a Gothic romance story, though it is threaded with supernatural elements that make it much more entertaining than, say, ‘Jane Eyre.’
If you go into ‘Crimson Peak’ expecting a super scary blood fest, you’re going to be disappointed. Hence the warning to beware… But if you’re up for a love story with a twisted, spooky spin, ‘Crimson Peak’ is actually quite good. The visuals are absolutely fantastic and the story – while perhaps in need of some shoring up – serves to keep you engaged throughout the film. If ‘Crimson Peak’ sounds up your alley, don’t wait for rental – it’s best seen on the biggest screen you can find.
